Scanning through the diary list, I'm seeing mostly candidate diaries. All fine and good I suppose but I'm noticing that there's a lot of kicking the same stories around from various and sundry angles.
So I thought that I'd do a brief write up of the news that's going on elsewhere...
Margaret Spelling warns states that they have to follow NCLB regardless
U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings on Friday warned states that they still have to comply with the federal No Child Left Behind law, despite a recent court ruling allowing a lawsuit that challenges its funding.
Spellings told a group of business leaders in San Diego on Friday that her department will vigorously fight the Jan. 7 ruling by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati.
The court revived a challenge to the federal law by allowing a lawsuit filed by school districts in three states and the nation's largest teachers union. The plaintiffs claim the No Child Left Behind law is an unfunded mandate.
The editor of GolfWeek has been fired for
Ten days after a Golf Channel anchor was suspended for her use of "lynch" in commentary on Tiger Woods, an editor was fired Friday for illustrating the controversy with a noose on the cover of Golfweek magazine.
Dave Seanor, vice president and editor who took responsibility for the noose cover of the Jan. 19 issue, was replaced by Jeff Babineau.
"We apologize for creating this graphic cover that received extreme negative reaction from consumers, subscribers and advertisers across the country," Turnstile Publishing Co. president William J. Kupper Jr. said. "We were trying to convey the controversial issue with a strong and provocative graphic image. It is now obvious that the overall reaction to our cover deeply offended many people. For that, we are deeply apologetic."

The White House possesses no archived e-mail messages for many of its component offices, including the Executive Office of the President and the Office of the Vice President, for hundreds of days between 2003 and 2005, according to the summary of an internal White House study that was disclosed yesterday by a congressional Democrat.
The 2005 study -- whose credibility the White House attacked this week -- identified 473 separate days in which no electronic messages were stored for one or more White House offices, said House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.).
WV Chief Justice recuses himself
Chief Justice Elliott E. Maynard of the West Virginia Supreme Court disqualified himself on Friday from further participation in a case involving a powerful coal executive after photographs of two men meeting in Monte Carlo in 2006 were filed in court this week.
"I have no doubt in my own mind and firmly believe I have been and would be fair and impartial in this case," Chief Justice Maynard wrote in a statement. "The mere appearance of impropriety, regardless of whether it is supported by fact, can compromise the public confidence in the courts. For that reason — and that reason alone — I will recuse myself."
There's lots more out there...oh and it's Friday so be on the look out for admin efforts to "Take out the Trash."
